After completing his MMus in organ and harpsichord under Anthony Jennings at the University of Auckland James undertook two years post-graduate study at the Royal Conservatory, the Hague under Professor Bob van Asperen. On his return to NZ he was appointed Director of Music at the Auckland Cathedral. He is currently Senior Lecturer in Early Music Performance/Performance Practice and Associate Head, Performance at the School of Music, The University of Auckland. One of New Zealand’s leading players of historic keyboards (harpsichord, fortepiano and organ), he has an active performing career as a soloist, accompanist and conductor. He is Artistic Director of The Age of Discovery and a member of the baroque chamber ensemble Extempore. He has produced a number of CD recordings, including And I saw in a New Heaven (Auckland Cathedral Singers), Sesquialtera (Avery 1779, Ponsonby Baptist) … New Zealand’s first CD of an 18th century keyboard instrument, and JS Bach In the Italian Style - a recording of repertoire for solo harpsichord (released June 2009).
