and Performance Practice, Head of School and Director of
Performance Studies at the University of Auckland.
James is one of New Zealand's leading exponents of historic

Firmus, which specialises in historically-aware performance
of Renaissance and Baroque sacred choral repertoire. He is
a member of the period instrument ensemble Extempore, which
has established a fine reputation both in NZ and abroad for
its vibrant performances of 18th century chamber music.
James' university teaching covers the fields of Historical
Performance Practice, harpsichord, historic organ, fortepiano,
baroque chamber music, harmony, history, and musicianship.
James also directs the ensemble University Baroque, which presents
historically aware performances during the academic year, generally
on modern instruments.
James is also Assistant Director of Music of Auckland Cathedral
and Organ Master at the University's Maclaurin Chapel (which
houses a fine 17th-Century style Dutch organ). He is a National
Recording Artist for Radio New Zealand, is active as a conductor,
recitalist, soloist and accompanist, as well as being demand
