James Tibbles - Assistant Musical Director

MMus Auck., CertPostGradSt. The Hague

James Tibbles is Senior Lecturer in Early Music Performance and Performance Practice, Head of School and Director of Performance Studies at the University of Auckland.

James is one of New Zealand's leading exponents of historic keyboard instruments (harpsichord, fortepiano and organ). He is also founder/director of the early music chamber choir Cantus Firmus, which specialises in historically-aware performance of Renaissance and Baroque sacred choral repertoire. He is a member of the period instrument ensemble Extempore, which has established a fine reputation both in NZ and abroad for its vibrant performances of 18th century chamber music.

James' university teaching covers the fields of Historical Performance Practice, harpsichord, historic organ, fortepiano, baroque chamber music, harmony, history, and musicianship. James also directs the ensemble University Baroque, which presents historically aware performances during the academic year, generally on modern instruments.

James is also Assistant Director of Music of Auckland Cathedral and Organ Master at the University's Maclaurin Chapel (which houses a fine 17th-Century style Dutch organ). He is a National Recording Artist for Radio New Zealand, is active as a conductor, recitalist, soloist and accompanist, as well as being demand for workshops on the Renaissance and Baroque performance practice. James is on the international panel of examiners for the Royal Schools of Music, and is a Special Commissioner for the RSCM.
