About NZYC> Upcoming Events > International Tour 2007

New Zealand Youth toured to Canada and Europe in mid 2007.

In 2007 the New Zealand Youth Choir toured to Canada, the UK and Spain.

The Farewell Concert was held at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell, Auckland at 7:30pm on Tuesday 26th June 2007.

In Canada the choir performed in Toronto and at Niagara Falls (Friday 29th June, Oaks Outdoor Theatre after 3pm), and then went on to represent New Zealand at an international choral festival, Festival 500, in St John's, Newfoundland from the 1st - 8th July 2007 www.festival500.com. The choir had been selected as 1 of 34 choirs to attend this Festival. This was a wonderful experience for the young singers, as they had the opportunity to participate in workshops and master classes with international conductors, as well as perform every day in venues throughout the city. New Zealand music has a special connection with Newfoundland, as the well-known NZ composer Douglas Mews was born in Newfoundland before moving to New Zealand. The choir performed some of his music while at the Festival.

In Europe the choir competeed at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales www.international-eisteddfod.co.uk. At the Eisteddfod the choir had opportunity to perform in a New Zealand-themed concert, which featured New Zealand soprano Hayley Westenra. The choir also competed in Spain at the Festival Internacional de Musica de Cantonigros www.fimc.es and presented a concert in Barcelona on Wednesday 18 July at St Maria di Pi at 8:00pm.

While on tour the choir performed a concert at St John's Smith Square in London at 7:30pm on Tuesday 17th July.

In all of these countries the choir acted as cultural ambassadors, presenting New Zealand and Pacific repertoire, including kapa haka.
